"One of the most interesting phases of the history of nineteenth-century Europe. The story of the Italian revolutionary movement .... is full of such incidents as the novelist most desires. . . . This novel is one of the strongest of the year, vivid in conception and dramatic in execution, filled with intense human feeling, and worked up to a tremendously impressive climax." Dial. The Gadfly E L Voynich Ethel Lillian Voynich 9781484926284 Books

I dont know if I missed something but to me the book wasn't so much about Arthur's(main character) love and unflinching devotion to political revolution as most people would have you think. I think the most important line in the whole book is the one taken from Socrates about Athens being a great horse that has grown sluggish from its size, in need of a gadfly to rouse it; it really sets the tone for everything, everybody is faced with a very difficult decision and everyone is in need of a gadfly so to speak. Gemma is drowning in a sea of guilt, Montanelli is of course faced with probably the toughest decision ever at the end.Arthur has also grown sluggish from his anger and cynicism and all the hardships he has endured, hes also in need of a gadfly, or some sort of inner revolution that will make him able to forgive. However as far as revolution in the political sense....I dont think that was so much the point of this book. Anyway those are my as-condensed-as-possible thoughts.

...if I live or if I die." Tremendous drama, capturing quickly the complexities of human development in so many camps. This book had me excited to turn the pages.

It will take some time to understand the intent of the author's finish, but she may have created something different than she intended. Soviets could not have understood what they were pushing!

This story is of the same quality as 'Tale of 2 Cities,' so I expect it will become more available soon.
Worth a read. Unlike anything I had read and a book not well known in the USA whereas extremely popular in Russia. An insight into the devotion to and passion for communism as an ideal and a way of life. This book was an inspiration to many for decades and yet has remained unknown in America.
I first read the Gadfly in Spanish when I was twelve, even though I couldn't understand it fully at tat time, something attracted me as a magnet.
I read it again when I was seventeen, and it has been my favorite book since then.
The Gadfy is (In my humble opinion) one of the greatest novels ever written. Beyond political or religious considerations, The Gadfly is a must-have and of course a must-read.
It escapes my understanding why it hasn't been taken to the silver screen after the excellent (1955) very hard to find russian version. I can only imagine the success it would have today.
I'm buying a new copy for my kids, and I recommend The Gadfly to everyone.
Can anybody award it less than five stars?
One of the best book I've ever read. Good relationships, interesting story line, some mystery and suspense and some love thrown in.
This work is pure treasure and a great place for someone who wishes to begin reading fine literature to start. I cannot believe that I never heard of this book until I was 50! It ended up on my large "reading list" and I had to order it online to find a copy -- then (I kick myself) it laid around here for a year before I opened it. When I finally did, I discovered that I could not put this one down -- a quintessential page-turner. It's a very personal saga of a very good man, and, a Priest who betrays him during an Italian rebel uprising period.

I savored "War and Peace" and "The Brothers Karamazov", and while "The Gadfly" is that sort of book (much shorter), it's not such a tough go as the former titles. Voynich was brilliant. I read an average of three books a week, and have done so for many years, and this one is one of my top 3 reads ever. Don't miss this one and if you wish to double your pleasure, get a copy of Dmitri Shostakovich's outstanding soundtrack to "The Gadfly" movie and allow it to play as wallpaper as you read Shostakovich The Gadfly; Five Days - Five Nights (Suites). (This is not the original soundtrack but it's actually better for the most part -- see my review.)

(Currently, the DVD of the film itself is very difficult to find and there are neither English subtitles nor English voiceover -- it's spoken in Russian.)

Incredible stuff!
The novel as such is great, but the the publication of it is bad. Someone took the text (which is in the public domain) and just printed it with very little editing or formatting. I could do as well by downloading the book from project Gutenberg or a similar place and printing it on my printer or reading it from the screen.
The book is just as sharp and well written as I remember, I read it first when I was a new bride, 50 years ago. . To think that this book was written in 1897 by a woman. The subject is contemporary, even if the setting isn't. The story of an illicit affair and the loss of loved ones coupled with a burning desire to free the Italians from the Austrian overlords. The book has twists and turns, pathos and love. The final scene of the book was as I remembered with the description of the firing squad that was equal to that of THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE.
I dont know if I missed something but to me the book wasn't so much about Arthur's(main character) love and unflinching devotion to political revolution as most people would have you think.
