Dauphin, Dorian and Dead is a tragicomic romp through four continents that answers the question can two twice- divorced baby boomers find love in the modern world? Peter meets Monica through an elite dating agency, opening a whole new world of romance. The book tracks the ascent and descent of midlife romance, and documents the rela- tionship in a year-long blog. What do we expect of love at midlife, when it's not about procreation, and how do we sustain it?

I felt like a voyeur reading this book, like I was peeking into someone's private diary. This book is primarily an epistolary novel (that incorporates letters, emails, blog entries) about unrequited love: a mid-life love affair written from a man's point of view.I see that some other reviewers have called this the male "Eat, Pray, Love" and in a way I agree, but it's also seasoned with a dash of "Brigit Jones' Diary" and a side-order of William Burroughs.
I also see that some have called it a "memoir." However, the writer's and the narrator's names differ, so I'm calling it fiction. It reads, though, like highly autobiographical fiction, so I can see how it elides with memoir.
Long before the narrator is willing to admit it to himself, the reader can see the relationship heading toward disaster. The woman he loves is aloof and wealthy; she strings him along, and he keeps hope alive, in vain. My favorite part of the book was how he dealt with the aftermath, how he grapples with paradoxes and pain and growth.
This paragraph really struck home for me. I've heard a lot of women (including myself) claim this as a personal issue, but it was striking to hear it come from a man: "I cannot be alone. I cannot stop chasing that fantasy, that hope. True Love. And it has caused me trouble all my life. Distracted me from life goals, form the integrity of my relationships, friends telling me I disappear when I am in a new romance."
Given that, it's sweet to see that he eventually makes art out of it.

Dauphin Dorian and Dead The Year Without a Net Brian Gruber 9781466258945 Books Reviews
In what is undoubtedly the most literate love affair I've ever experienced in a book, Gruber captures the true story of the year-long romantic arc between Peter and Monica, two interesting, intellectual, passionate, historied, fearful, conflicted grown-ups. Especially interesting is the peek behind the curtains, in the form of the private blog they shared to capture the "projects" they'd do together - it scratches a voyeuristic itch, while instilling a building sense of dread. (Reading between the lines of their messages to each other was, on more than one occasion, agonizing.) Despite this (or perhaps because of it), the story is beautiful - capturing the incredible highs of a relationship of creative and intellectual equals. If "Eat, Pray, Love" was somehow meant to instill hope that one may cast aside the disappointments of one's current life and find love and happiness in a foreign land, "Dauphin" reminds us that loving is a hard business, and the best intentions sometimes fail, and we survive, and damned if we won't take that chance all over again. This book is the grown-up love story we need - a brutally candid examination of all the hopes and catastrophes that befall modern, middle-age relationships. (I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting. Twice.)
I found Brian's book to be entertaining, heartbreaking, sweet, funny, full of all kinds of truths about the way men vs. women think and/or feel, thought provoking and it was relatable on more than a few scenarios for me. No matter what stage you may be in (or out of) in a relationship, it has a way of pulling you in and rooting for love. Finding love and happiness in life is what we all aspire to, and the journey Brian takes us on makes one feel hopeful that it IS attainable, even though life throws us curve balls on a daily basis. It was great to get a male perspective on love and relationships. Buy this book-you won't be disappointed!
Funny and insightful, Mr. Gruber is a very good storyteller.
A surprisingly innovative look at love from a baby boomer guy finally figuring out what trying to couple up means, especially when one loves more than the other. Brian effectively shares his story with plenty of honesty (too much sometimes) and great humor along his journey. You wanted this story to end differently, however, it was fairly clear at the beginning of this book (or just the title) that it was pretty much over before it had a chance to start. It did not distract, however, from my keen interest in re-learning all the lessons we all have gone through on both sides of the fence. Loved the 7 vacillations Brian uses to get through this break up, a HILARIOUS device and tool for those waging similar love/hate debates. Biggest lesson learned Never too late to try again (and again, again). Cant wait for the next set of rules from Brian!!
I have read a dozen memoirs on love affairs told by a woman, but never a detailed account of a relationship from beginning to end told by a man. It is intriguing to get in the mind of a man's perspective during the beginning and end of a passionate relationship between two complex people who have seen it all, yet are renewed and young again with the connection and love they unexpectedly find. It's even more rare to find a man sensitive enough to be honest about the emotional highs and lows from a love affair. Love and relationships do change with age, and this memoir succeeds in revealing how complexity can add complications, but also layers of meaning and fulfillment from experiences left behind, and the wisdom to appreciate the experiences still ahead.
Most importantly, Peter's joie de vivre seeps through to energize every scene and moment in the book, and stays with the reader after the book is done. His ability to enjoy life, to actively seek life's most intimate and soulful treasures is clearly the force in the affair and a joyful reminder to relax, read poetry, and keep dreaming of sweet and passionate love, at any age.
