It is nearing the turn of the 22nd century, and government-mandated social networking has virtually eliminated privacy and made detective work nearly obsolete. Much to his dismay and shame, Sherlock Holmes never has any cases to solve. He distracts himself from his professional failings with bare-knuckle boxing at an underground fight club and vials of cocaine and morphine. John Watson spends his days in an operating theatre on an Army base in Afghanistan, doing his best to patch up the wounded and failing more often than he'd like. The dark, violent worlds in which both men choose to live complicate their romantic lives and cause them terrible suffering but set them on paths that are destined to cross.
BEFORE HOLMES MET WATSON is the prequel to the novel, SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE ADVENTURE OF THE PAPER JOURNAL, an action-packed adventure and love story set in an eerily dystopian near future.

I awarded this novella a fourth star because its author can write.Even when the story delves into one of its many dark corners, he manages to express them neatly and sometimes even beautifully. It must not have been easy as this story is dark and turns darker as it move forwards.
The setting is highly dystopian but unfortunately perfectly believable in its exaggerating tendencies which are already visible, especially in Britain and the US.
Watson and Holmes are BOTH -and this is a significant deviation from the original stories- hurting and disfunctional and their psyches are decidedly not pretty to look at.
The overall tone is depressing and it does not make for an easy read but that I am not sure whether I want to read the sequel is certainly not due to a lack of writing skills.

Before Holmes Met Watson John + Sherlock Book 1 edition by Harrison Kitteridge Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Kept waiting for something to happen. So so
First saw Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Paper Journal and was mulling over getting it or not when I saw this gem being free. Decided to try this out first and see how I liked it....and like it I did! Wonderful piece of work, definitely more than I expected. Off to buy the first book now )
I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and originality of this book. I really wasn't expecting such an emotional and sensitive book when dealing with the master of logic. But as A Holmes fan, I have to say it worked surprisingly well.
I was astonished.
So now I Just have to buy the next one and see how Holmes and Watson get on with it.
Incredibly insightful characters whose defects reveal a magnetic field of attraction and descriptions of wounded people . The the reader finds a new way to see the men with great success and a deep love to focus on their future.
Very well written and extremely detailed character development. Can't say I agree with some of it, but it is interesting imagining what Holmes and Watson were like before they became a team. Excellent editing and formatting although most don't care about that; I find it distracting if done poorly. Perhaps I will re-read this in a few weeks...
Got this book for free and I was caught up into the storyline quickly. The one thing that stood out was the intriguing usage of written words. The author uses words from the English language that most modern day writers do not know how to use or refuse to use. I like being challenged with words that make an individual think and grow in vocabulary skills.
I think you did a beautiful job with the Sherlock Holmes challenge and I look forward to reading the next book.
First note this novel assumes Holmes and Watson are gay but even with that said, there is enough insight into their lives and relationships that it really doesn't matter (this novel contains very few, non-descript sex scenes). I found the back story of Holmes and Watson to be quite complex two very wounded people who ultimately, find each other (as any fan knows). Watson's war story is heart wrenching Holmes' history with people is sorrowful. I enjoyed the character development and found myself thinking often of the BBC characters and how well they would portray this history. I think the author got this right!
